Cyclid 10mg/2ml Injection works by stopping a substance called acetylcholine in the brain and helps to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as muscle stiffness, sweating, and production of saliva, and improves walking ability in people with Parkinson’s disease, and also helps to controls Parkinson-like side effects caused by certain medicines used to manage mental health conditions.

Side Effects of Cyclid 10mg/2ml Injection

Common side effects include:

• Dry mouth (most common)
• Mydriasis (dilated pupils), blurred vision
• Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, constipation)
• Rarely, allergic reactions (e.g., rash) or muscular weakness
• High doses may cause vertigo, confusion, or hallucinations

Indication of Cyclid 10mg/2ml Injection

Cyclid 10mg/2ml Injection contains Procyclidine which belongs to the group of medicines called Anticholinergics. It is used to relieve and manage the signs of Parkinson's disease such as stiff muscles, paralysis, shaking of hands (tremors), trouble talking, writing, and walking, producing too much saliva and dribbling, sweating, uncontrolled eye movements, and depression.

Pharmacology

Procyclidine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Perkinil, is an antimuscarinic agent used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It works by correcting the relative cholinergic excess that is thought to result from dopamine deficiency in Parkinson's disease. Procyclidine is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly disappears from tissues. Following intravenous administration, it begins to act within 5 to 20 minutes, with effects lasting up to 4 hours.

Dosage & Administration of Cyclid 10mg/2ml Injection

Parenteral Administration (Emergency Cases):

• Intravenous (IV): 5-10 mg, with higher doses possible if required.
• Intramuscular (IM): 5-10 mg as a single dose, may repeat after 20 minutes if needed, up to a maximum of 20 mg daily.
• Elderly Patients: Lower doses are required due to increased sensitivity and slower metabolism.

Child Dose

Oral Administration:

• Dystonia in Children:
  • Ages 7-12 years: 1.25 mg three times daily (tid).
  • Ages 12-18 years: 2.5 mg three times daily (tid).

Parenteral Administration (Emergency Cases):

• Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV):
  • Ages <2 years: 0.5-2 mg.
  • Ages 2-10 years: 2-5 mg.
  • Ages 10-18 years: 5-10 mg.

The safety and efficacy of Perkinil in pediatric patients have not been established. Its use in children should be considered only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Your doctor will decide on an appropriate dose and duration depending on your age, body weight, and disease condition. Do not stop taking Cyclid 10mg/2ml Injection unless your doctor advises you to stop. Otherwise, your symptoms may return.

Interaction

• The anticholinergic effects of procyclidine may be enhanced by other anticholinergic agents, such as amantadine.
• The absorption of ketoconazole may be reduced if taken concurrently with procyclidine.

Contraindications

Procyclidine should be used with caution in:

• Children and elderly patients
• Individuals with diarrhea, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, urinary retention, hepatic or renal impairment

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of procyclidine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Therefore, its use in these populations should be carefully weighed against potential risks.

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution is advised in patients with hepatic or renal impairment, and in children, the elderly, pregnant, or breastfeeding women.
• Patients with mental disorders may experience a psychotic episode when Perkinil is used to treat extrapyramidal side effects of neuroleptic drugs.
• Perkinil should not be withdrawn abruptly to avoid rebound Parkinsonism symptoms.
